Traditionally, at least one of them would need to be on the switch where the SPAN port is. But they didn't both need to be, and with modern IOS-based switches I believe you can SPAN remotely. The traditional SPN config came in two flavours: traffic to/from a specific port, or to/from a specific VLAN. The latter applies to all ports in the VLAN.... David Gillett
