well I would do yum install snmp or apt-get snmp and also, just in order to avoid the use of solar winds at all, a yum install mrtg or apt-get snmp (of course provided you downloaded and installed apt-get from freshrpms.org) and then use the readme on mrtg to configure it and start using it. this is an all open source answer I use daily.
