RE: Recommending an IDS system

I evaluated Sourcefire, Snort, and ISS last year for deployment at a previous company. We decided Snort wasn't a good idea for us because it wasn't enterprise ready (or we didn't have the in house expertise to make it enterprise ready) I thought that Sourcefire had a very good product with two exceptions. (1) I had assumed that it would be cheaper than other enterprise IDS software (ISS, Dragon) As it turns out it really wasn't. This wasn't a deciding factor because ISS, our other option, was just as expensive. (2) We had a large deployment, and we didn't have a large comfort factor in being one of the largest customers for a brand new company. On another note, I am now using the free Sentinix http://sentinix.org/ which can be used for all sorts of things, including enterprise manageability of numerous Snort sensors. -- Mitchell

Does anyone have any insight into the Sourcefire products? They are Linux appliances based on the Snort system. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ethical Hacking at the InfoSec Institute.
