For what it's worth, if you want a really secure *nix system, I would seriously recommend OpenBSD. AFAIK, it's probably one of the most secure *nix distro's out there right now, and personally I wouldn't say that learning BSD over Linux is tough at all, if you can work a Unix system, you're halfway there. Also the really good point here is that OpenBSD boasts openly on their website, "Only one remote hole in the default install, in more than 7 years!" Which is damn right impressive if you ask me, and AFAIK the remote hole was cause via a flaw in SSH. I realy am a newbie in Linux. A friend of mine, some time ago, recommended me and help me to install Gentoo. Since then I use it without any problem regarding staying updated against the security holes. Also software instalationand and updates it is easy to handle especialy for a new comer in the linux world. It realy is a good linux distribution. Cheers! I like Slackware myself ( http://www.slackware.com/ ). It is as close to
pure
Linux as you can get. It's getting easier to manage also. As far as
security
goes, that depends largely on the admin but, Slackware requires far fewer patches and upgrades than more well known varients because they don't
rewrite
everything before releasing it. Good luck. ---------- Original Message ----------- From: "Kareem Mahgoub" <kareem () thewayout net> To: <security-basics () securityfocus com> Sent: Tue, 2 Mar 2004 08:41:26 +0200 Subject: Linux Distribution RecomendationHello list, I would like to have recommendation for a Linux Distribution satisfying the following: a- Secure enough for Buisness applications ( i.e. Mail Server) b- Kind of Easy to manage and use. c- Available Updates maintained by the production company.
