Yes, I did understand it, I think

To access the external FTP server, you'd have the following setup:

FTP Client --> Dept Firewall -->Internal Router--> External Firewall --> Remote FTP server (Internet)


I think this must be a very common problem " connecting with FTP clients to the outside world through a firewall". In our case, the fact of having a departmental firewall and a proxy in the middle may difficult the things.

You must be using the proxy just for web access. You can also check POP3 e-mail (for example) from your LAN, right?
