Anders,You are correct. Verisign bought Thawte a few years back and kept them as the "bargin" brand. There are other alternatives, however. You probably want to crack open an un-tinkered with version of IE and see who the default trusted CA's are. You should be able to use any of them.

I've used Thawte on a couple of occasions, since they are exactly the same, only cheaper.
