We published a guide entitled: "Windows XP: Surving the First Day". This guide is intended to help users of new Windows XP systems to patch systems without getting infected themselves. The target audience of this guide is home users and small businesses. THIS IS NOT A HARDENING GUIDE. The guide illustrates the minimum steps required to secure a Windows XP system so it will survive the ongoing worm attacks while the user downloads necessary patches. The need for such a guide became obvious from various data collected by the internet storm center (isc.sans.org) and DShield (www.dshield.org). Not only is the number of Blaster/Nachia infected machines essentially constant, but many of the messages we receive from owners of infected machines indicate that some of these machines have been infected recently after installing a new system. Many systems, as shipped right now, are not patched and can be infected within minutes of connecting them to the Internet. -- CTO SANS Internet Storm Center http://isc.sans.org phone: (617) 786 1563 fax: (617) 786 1550 jullrich () sans org
