Morton,

You might want to check out http://www.astero.com - they have an excellent
firewall (requires a standalone box with a 400 MHz processor and 128 MB
RAM); it runs on a hardened Linux distro, and you can include Kapersky AV
for a nominal price (or free, if you particpate actively in the :"power
users forums:). It's freely downloadable for personal use.

 As well, Smoothwall GPL runs on as little as a 486; it sets up in minutes,
and
will work with 1 NIC + an external modem to 3 NIC's - ISP, trusted LAN, DMZ.
You admin it via local terminal, http or https, or SSH into it. Nice
headless
item, tucked away and running erhm, 'smoothly'. Has traffic graphs built in;
SNORT, Web Proxy, DHCP, and it's easy enough to install squidGuard into it.
Piece of cake, works a treat ;)

 cheers,
 /b
