Some methods that can be employed for detecting backdoors:

1. Installing anti-virus software to detect worms, trojans, or viruses.
2. Installing a personal firewall, or using an external firewall to filter ports that you don't need or to watch outbound data.
3. Scanning yourself with a portscanner.

These are personal use methods. Network-wide, you would probably need an array of intrusion detection devices, and various firewalls are vunlerable points (i.e. access points, DMZ, etc)
